The same thing that led David<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ferguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>co\u2011write and produce their 14th album \u201cMockingbird\u201d (2018) and release it on his own label Easy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: The Gibson<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing. And they can write a damn good<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>country song. They\u2019ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>almost every Premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder, and, if<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>that\u2019s not enough, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCoury. It\u2019s a resume almost anybody in country music would be proud to have. But despite all<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>of this, The Gibson Brothers are not yet household names. Their latest album,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDarkest Hour,\u201d&nbsp;produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas might just change that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as you hear Leigh singing with Alison Krauss [\u201cI Feel The Same Way As You\u201d] on the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>new project you realize that his voice is as good as anyone in music today. Add the brother<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>harmony to that and they have something truly unique. While \u201cMockingbird\u201d featured gorgeous<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>production, recreating the sound on stage was difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe put together a little band to go out&nbsp;and try to recreate it,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric told me, but we couldn\u2019t. We would have to have such a huge band to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>try to recreate that record, but we did the best we could.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Douglas\u2014who has won 14 Grammy awards and backed up everyone from Ray Charles to Paul<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon and George Jones\u2014wanted to make a record they could actually play on the road. So he<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>picked the best songs (out of dozens) and squirreled them away in Sound Emporium\u2019s Studio B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But then the pandemic hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe did our last shows in March of 2020,&nbsp;\u201d Eric told me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were in&nbsp;Nashville the week everything was shutting down. It was surreal, but Jerry was like,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Guys, the&nbsp;world\u2019s going crazy. Let\u2019s let this be our little cocoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2019 And we did. We cut all of the acoustic stuff&nbsp;and then went home and didn\u2019t play any more gigs until things started opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we went&nbsp;back and finished the record with Jerry in February of 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is arguably the strongest record The Gibson Brothers have ever made. The songs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>recorded in the first recording period featured Mike Barber (bass), Justin Moses (mandolin),<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eamon McGloughlin (fiddle), and of course, Jerry Douglas, adding in John Gardner (drums),<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guthrie Trapp (electric guitar), and Todd Parks (bass) for the final tracks,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDarkest Hour\u201d&nbsp;showcases just how easily Eric and Leigh move from what Dan Auerbach dubbed \u201ccountry soul\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(\u201cI Go Driving\u201d) to high octane bluegrass (\u201cWhat a Difference A Day Makes\u201d and \u201cDust\u201d) with<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Douglas always keeping the spotlight on the songs themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I love about those&nbsp;guys,\u201d Douglas told me&nbsp;\u201cthey are just great songwriters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up on a dairy farm in northern New York and then traveling around the world in a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>bluegrass band has given them a unique vantage point on life, and the songs on \u201cDarkest Hour\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>are a testament to that.&nbsp;\u201cJerry wanted to hear everything we\u2019d written,\u201d Eric told me,&nbsp;\u201cso we just<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>sent him songs: brand new songs, old songs, there\u2019s stuff on that record 20 years old that we<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>never recorded. We wanted to see what he would do with us as singer\u2011songwriters. We respect<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>him that much. Some of my favorite records are Jerry Douglas produced records. He didn\u2019t<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>disappoint.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If The Gibson Brothers had stayed in Nashville in 1999 they might possibly be Grand Ole Opry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>members by now. At the very least they would be hit songwriters on Music Row. But, just like<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>their buddy Del McCoury, they chose family over success (McCoury was in his 50s when he<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>moved to Nashville and didn\u2019t really see major success until he was approaching 60). All they<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>need is someone to shine a light on them.Their talent level is well\u2011established, the only<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>producers they have ever worked with are Ricky Skaggs, Dan Auerbach, David Ferguson<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>andJerry Douglas. I dare say not many musicians can stack up a list of producers that strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For The Gibson Brothers though, they just want to keep writing, singing, and standing on a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>stage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gibson Brothers two decades ago and offered to produce their debut record.
